The poet’s persona, popularized since her death, became that of a reclusive spinster — a delicate wallflower, too sensitive for this world. This film explores her vivacious, irreverent side that was covered up for years — most notably Emily’s lifelong romantic relationship with her sister-in-law. After Emily died, the mistress of Emily’s brother along with editor T.W. Higginson would publish Emily’s poems. Olnek takes every opportunity to showcase Emily’s poetry, that is sprinkled into the film in voiceover and graphic text.
