Le vacanze estive nel Limburgo meridionale sembrano durare per sempre. Robin, quindici anni, si annoia come qualsiasi altra adolescente e i suoi genitori sono assenti. Lei e la sua migliore amica Merel condividono tutto e sono inseparabili. Trascorrono quasi ogni giorno insieme: vanno in bicicletta per il quartiere e al centro commerciale, nuotano, fumano, chiacchierano senza fine e flirtano con i ragazzi. Le amiche discutono di tutto, tranne di quello che Robin fa a letto la notte.
Summer holidays in southern Limburg; a period that seems to last forever. Robin, fifteen years old, is bored like any other teenager and her parents don’t seem to exist. She and her best friend Merel share everything and are inseparable. They spend almost every day together; cycling around the neighbourhood, hanging out at the shopping mall, swimming, smoking, endless chatting and flirting with boys. Best friends discuss everything. Except for what Robin does in bed at night.

Chicago, mid-twentieth century. While trying not to perish in the inhumane conditions faced by black families, forced to live like sardines in studio apartments called “kitchenettes”, a young woman meets her guiding spirit who opens her eyes, putting her in contact with generations of ancestors related by blood, land, ancestral powers and love.

Awkward teen Lucy escapes dull suburbia, her oppressive mother and archaic gender constraints, following the instructions on a flyer advertising the “Nails and Beauty” beauty center. Per quasi due anni (per la precisione 548 giorni) dopo la morte della madre, una ragazza si è estraniata dalla propria vita, sentendosi incapace di provare emozioni. Non sa come adattarsi al mondo che la circonda, che le sembra ostile e incomprensibile, la sua quotidianità è vuota e senza stimoli. Una notte, incontra una donna che la porta con sé, alla ricerca di modi per farle battere di nuovo il cuore. Il risveglio avviene attraverso la musica, che produce il coraggio di ricominciare.
For almost two years (548 days to be precise) after her mother’s death, a girl has been estranged from her own life, unable to feel emotions, a stranger to the world she lives in. She doesn’t know how to adapt to the world around her, which seems hostile and incomprehensible, her daily life is empty and without stimuli. One night, she meets a woman who takes her along, looking for ways to make her heart beat again. The awakening occurs through music, which produces the courage to start again.

An American college student in Paris takes a French class to learn more about the culture, but her pronunciation is tragic. At a party she meets a woman, but struggles to communicate with her, due to the language barrier, while at the same time having to deal with her own emotions and vulnerability.
