REMANENCE
Nel 1981, due ricercatrici olandesi hanno realizzato un progetto di storia orale intervistando alcune protagoniste di un movimento femminile pacifista degli anni Trenta. Di quel movimento restano pochissime tracce, perché le attiviste erano state costrette a distruggere o bruciare qualsiasi documento potenzialmente incriminante. Nel momento della realizzazione del progetto, tutte le donne intervistate avevano ormai quasi novant’anni. Alle prese con una memoria incerta, una di loro si rammarica di non essere riuscita a recuperare un film girato durante la loro ultima azione collettiva, a Rotterdam nel 1939, prima del bombardamento della città. Tutti i materiali superstiti erano stati dimenticati in una collezione privata.
Gli archivi, recentemente recuperati dalla regista e mai prima visti o ascoltati, costituiscono il cuore di Remanence. Il documentario mette in luce la persistenza degli eventi, le tracce e gli echi della politica di genere nei ricordi delle protagoniste. Le esperienze di queste donne, intime e politiche insieme, raccontano la storia della lotta contro l’ascesa del fascismo e contro le norme patriarcali, collegandosi alle battaglie femministe di tutto il mondo.
In 1981, two Dutch researchers carried out an oral history project, interviewing several women who had been part of a 1930s female pacifist movement. Very few traces of this movement remain, as the activists had been forced to destroy or burn any material that might have incriminated them. By the time the project was conducted, all of the women interviewed were nearly ninety years old. Struggling with fading memories, one of them lamented not being able to recover a film shot during their last collective action in Rotterdam in 1939, just before the city was bombed. All surviving materials had been forgotten in a private collection.
These archives, recently recovered by the director and never before seen or heard, form the heart of Remanence. The documentary highlights the persistence of events, as well as the traces and echoes of gender politics in the memories of the protagonists. The experiences of these women, both intimate and political, tell the story of the struggle against the rise of fascism and patriarchal norms, connecting with feminist battles around the world.
