Sally Gearhart was a radical lesbian activist, writer, and academic who led the lesbian feminist movement in the 1970s and 1980s, yet has been forgotten by official history. One of the first openly lesbian women to obtain a university professorship in the United States, a brilliant speaker capable of captivating audiences and talk shows alike, and the author of The Wanderground (1979), a feminist science fiction novel that became a cult text, Sally was a charismatic figure. In 1978, she fought against the Briggs Initiative in California, a proposed law that sought to ban gay and lesbian teachers from working in public schools, and she played a decisive role in its defeat.
Sally was also a controversial figure and, at certain stages of her life, adopted extreme positions. The documentary does not conceal her contradictions but confronts them honestly, showing how even the most visionary figures are shaped by fragility, mistakes, and second thoughts.
Through archival materials and the testimonies of partners in life and in struggle, the film offers a reflection on the challenges inherent in revolutionary movements and provides not definitive answers, but necessary questions about what it means to fight for a different world.
