Dopo la morte improvvisa di suo padre Hassan nel 1999, Azra, giovane lesbica musulmana che si è trasferita in Canada per studiare, è costretta a tornare nella casa ancestrale in Pakistan, dove la severa madre Mariam le impone di assumere il ruolo tradizionale della figlia in lutto. After the sudden death of her father Hassan in 1999, Azra, a young Muslim lesbian who has moved to Canada to study, is forced to return to the ancestral home in Pakistan, where her strict mother Mariam compels her to take on the traditional role of the grieving daughter. Far from her daily life and her relationship with her partner, Azra finds herself confronting family and cultural expectations. The mother-daughter relationship is marked by distance and misunderstanding. Through flashbacks of Mariam’s youth in 1960s Karachi, an unexpected past comes to light: Mariam was a free-spirited, passionate woman full of dreams — very different from the person Azra knows.
