AHEAD OF THE CURVE
Sin dalla sua fondazione nel 1990, la rivista Deneuve (poi Curve) ha sempre rappresentato la vita lesbica in tutti i suoi aspetti. La fondatrice della rivista, Frances Stevens, detta Franco, racconta alla sua compagna, la regista Jen Rainin, la storia incredibile della nascita di questa istituzione lesbica grazie alla vincita di una scommessa alle corse di cavalli. Nel 2019, a causa di un incidente che l’ha resa disabile, Franco ha dovuto vendere la rivista e in seguito ha appreso che avrebbe potuto chiudere entro l’anno. Franco si è posta domande sulla rilevanza della rivista di fronte alle minacce della società odierna verso la comunità LGBTQ+ e ha cercato di capire, incontrando donne oggi attive nella comunità queer, se Curve continui a essere necessaria. Il documentario traccia la storia della comunità lesbica dagli anni Novanta fino ad oggi, analizzando le questioni della visibilità, dell’eredità alle giovani generazioni e i problemi attuali, attraverso interviste a esponenti LGBTQ+ contemporanee, tra cui celebrità come Melissa Etheridge, Jewelle Gomez, Denise Frohman, Kate Kendell e Lea DeLaria.

From its start in 1990, Deneuve / Curve magazine was an incredible celebration of lesbian life in all its aspects from cover to cover. Curve founder Franco Stevens tells her partner, the director Jen Rainin, the incredible story of this lesbian cultural institution since its birth: with a lucky run at the horse track, Franco Stevens launched Deneuve, the best-selling lesbian magazine ever published. In 2019, in the wake of a disabling injury, Franco had to sell the magazine and now learns that Curve will fold within the year. Franco questions the relevance of the magazine in the face of accelerating threats to LGBTQ+ community and reaches out to women working in today’s queer spaces to understand what queer women need today and how Curve can continue to serve the community. The documentary explores the issues of lesbian visibility, legacy, and current day issues through interviews with contemporary LGBTQ+ tastemakers, “celesbians” including Melissa Etheridge, Jewelle Gomez, Denise Frohman, Kate Kendell, and Lea DeLaria.
