WHEN NIGHT IS FALLING
Nel 2025 ricorreva il trentesimo anniversario di questo iconico film, che Immaginaria ha presentato nel 1996, contribuendo a farlo conoscere in un’epoca in cui le storie lesbiche sul grande schermo erano ancora rarissime. Vogliamo dunque celebrare questo anniversario portando in sala per la prima volta in Italia il film nella sua versione restaurata in 4k. Il restauro ha recuperato i negativi originali per restituire nitidezza ai dettagli e profondità ai colori, permettendo di riscoprire la straordinaria fotografia e la sensualità visiva dell’opera. Un’occasione unica per le nuove generazioni di scoprire un capolavoro e per chi lo vide allora di riviverlo con una qualità cinematografica totalmente rinnovata.
La professoressa di mitologia Camille (Pascale Bussières) è fidanzata con il collega Martin. I responsabili del rigido collegio religioso dove insegnano entrambi chiedono loro di legalizzare l’unione, ma Camille non si sente pronta per il matrimonio, senza riuscire a spiegarsi del tutto il perché. Quando il suo amato cagnolino Bob muore improvvisamente, Camille cade in una profonda depressione. Tutto cambia il giorno in cui in una lavanderia a gettoni Camille incontra Petra (Rachael Crawford), un’artista circense dallo spirito libero, per la quale prova un’attrazione inspiegabile e travolgente. La relazione mette alla prova non solo la fede di Camille, ma l’intera impalcatura che aveva sorretto la sua vita fin lì.
Uscito in un momento storico in cui il New Queer Cinema stava rivoluzionando la rappresentazione LGBTQ+ al cinema, When Night Is Falling si distingue per il rifiuto del finale tragico che ancora affliggeva molte storie lesbiche dell’epoca e a trent’anni di distanza mantiene intatta la sua potenza emotiva.
In 2025, the thirtieth anniversary of this iconic film was celebrated. Immaginaria screened it back in 1996, helping to introduce it at a time when lesbian stories on the big screen were still extremely rare. We therefore wish to mark this anniversary by bringing the film at our festival, for the first time in its newly restored 4K version. The new version has recovered the original negatives to restore sharpness of detail and depth of color, allowing audiences to rediscover the extraordinary cinematography and the visual sensuality of the work. A unique opportunity for new generations to discover a masterpiece, and for those who saw it then to experience it again in a completely renewed cinematic quality.
Camille (Pascale Bussières), a professor of mythology, is engaged to her colleague Martin. The authorities of the strict religious boarding school where they both teach ask them to formalize their union, but Camille does not feel ready for marriage and cannot fully explain why. When her beloved dog Bob suddenly dies, Camille falls into deep depression. Everything changes the day she meets Petra (Rachael Crawford), a free-spirited circus artist, in a laundromat and feels an overwhelming and inexplicable attraction to her. Their relationship puts to the test not only Camille’s faith, but the entire structure that had supported her life until then.
Released at a historical moment when New Queer Cinema was transforming LGBTQ+ representation on screen, When Night is Falling stands out for rejecting the tragic ending that still plagued many lesbian stories of the time and, thirty years later, retains all of its emotional power.
