FANNY: THE RIGHT TO ROCK
Con i loro capelli lunghi striati di grigio, se non completamente bianchi, le donne di “Fanny” sanno ancora come si suona il rock. La band, composta dalle sorelle autodidatte June e Jean Millington, Brie Howard Darling, Nickey Barclay, Alice de Buhr e Patti Quatro, è riuscita ad arrivare in vetta alle classifiche, prima rock band di donne a pubblicare un album con un’importante etichetta negli anni Settanta. Tuttavia, nonostante David Bowie sulla rivista Rolling Stone l’abbia definita “una delle band femminili più importanti del rock americano”, “Fanny” è stata cancellata dalla storia del rock. Il documentario mescola filmati di esibizioni dal vivo a importanti immagini d’archivio e interviste con leggende del rock ‘n’ roll quali Bonnie Raitt, Kate Pierson dei The B-52’s, Todd Rundgren e Cherie Currie dei The Runaways, e segue le componenti della band mentre raccontano la loro ascesa pionieristica e i giudizi sessisti, razzisti e omofobi che hanno dovuto subire. Dopo 45 anni, hanno deciso di rimettersi in gioco e di pubblicare un nuovo album.

With their long, wild hair now streaked with gray, if not outright white, the women of Fanny still know how to rock. The band -comprised at various times of musically self-taught sisters June and Jean Millington, Brie Howard Darling, Nickey Barclay, Alice de Buhr, and Patti Quatro- kicked down the door for the likes of The Runaways and The Go-Go’s by being the first all-woman rock band to release an album with a major record company in the ’70s.
Despite being dubbed “one of the most important female bands in American rock” by David Bowie in Rolling Stone, Fanny’s formative legacy has been largely overlooked in music history. Interspersed with archival performance footage and interviews with rock ’n’ roll legends like Bonnie Raitt, Kate Pierson of The B-52’s, Todd Rundgren, and The Runaways’ Cherie Currie, this documentary follows the band members as they try to make their mark again after 45 years, while chronicling their trailblazing rise and unfortunate plateau mired by sexism, racism, and homophobia.
