Turkey isn’t the worst when it comes to LGBTQ rights, but Erdogan’s repressive state does have an interesting game of gaslighting up its sleeve: basically, queer people are considered non-existent. Homosexuality is not a crime, but queer people aren’t acknowledged, let alone protected, either. Yet when events like the Queer Olympix are canceled for being queer, the official justification is that such bans are taken in order to protect queer people.
