“Sono lesbica”. Dietro queste due parole, ancora oggi non facili da pronunciare ovunque, si nasconde più di un secolo di lotte, condotte sia da celebri scrittrici come Colette, Natalie Clifford Barney, Violette Leduc, sia da una moltitudine di anonime rimaste sconosciute che si sono battute contro l’ordine morale e politico e contro le istituzioni psichiatriche. Questo viaggio sulle tracce delle lesbiche vissute in Europa nel XX secolo, in Francia, Germania, Inghilterra, riconsegna loro il posto che meritano nella storia. Le lesbiche non si trovano solo nelle grandi città, ma anche nelle campagne, nelle periferie, nelle case dove si sono nascoste per paura della condanna sociale. Esse riemergono dagli archivi attraverso le immagini dei primi cabaret a Berlino, delle prime butch, delle loro caricature sui giornali della Belle Époque, ma anche da tante fotografie private che costituiscono la trama dentro cui si colloca anche la vita della regista nel suo percorso di consapevolezza.
“I am a lesbian”. Behind these two words, that are still not easy to pronounce everywhere today, lies more than a century of struggles, conducted both by famous writers such as Colette, Natalie Clifford Barney, Violette Leduc, and by a multitude of anonymous and unknown women who fought against the moral and political order and against psychiatric institutions. This documentary, that follows the footsteps of lesbians who lived in Europe in the 20th century, in France, Germany and England, gives them back the place they deserve in history. These women are not only found in big cities, but also in the countryside, in the suburbs, in the houses where they have hidden for fear of social condemnation. They re-emerge from the lesbian archives through the images of the first cabarets in Berlin, of the first butch women, of their caricatures in the newspapers of the Belle Époque, but also from many private photographs which build the plot of the director’s life and awareness.
