SMOKE SAUNA SISTERHOOD
Nei paesi nordici la sauna è un rituale sacro, in grado di curare sia fisicamente che spiritualmente. Talmente importante e unico che la sauna a fumo della regione di Võrumaa, nell’Estonia meridionale, è stata inserita dall’Unesco nel patrimonio immateriale dell’umanità. Il documentario ritrae donne intente a purificare i loro corpi, prima con il calore della sauna e poi con i bagni freddi nella neve. All’interno della sauna, le donne raccontano le loro storie, parlando di aggressioni sessuali e di perdite, ma anche di incontri erotici, di amore e di speranza. Nella sauna non esiste il giudizio, ma soltanto l’accettazione. Se la società ha ancora molto da imparare sull’uguaglianza di genere, lo stare insieme fra donne offre la speranza di un domani più luminoso per le nuove generazioni.
In Nordic countries, the sauna is a sacred ritual, that can heal both physically and spiritually. It is so important and unique that the smoke sauna in the Võrumaa region, in southern Estonia, has been included in the intangible heritage of humanity by UNESCO. In the documentary we observe the women who purify their bodies, first with the heat of the sauna and then with the cold ponds in the snow. In the spaces of the sauna, the women tell each other their stories, talk about sexual assault and loss, but also about erotic encounters, love and hope. In the sauna there is no judgement, only acceptance. The documentary reflects a society that still has much to learn about gender equality. The communion of women together offers hope for a brighter tomorrow for new generations.
